But local government groups said proper use of credit cards was
"entirely appropriate" and could cut red tape.

cards for legitimate purposes is entirely appropriate and transparent.
"It helps reduce red tape by removing the need to invoice businesses and
helps the cash-flow of regular suppliers who receive more prompt payment.

The Daily Telegraph said
it had unearthed the information after making a number of requests under the
Freedom of Information Act.

spending by 28% over the next four years.

officers had made trips to Goa in India, Bangkok in Thailand and Kyoto in Japan.
In a statement, Conservative-led Cornwall Council said it was one of the
largest local authorities in the country and its overall budget for the same
three year period was more than 拢3.5bn.
The council said the figures
quoted in the Daily Telegraph were still being checked but at least 拢1.3m of the
costs for overseas travel and hotels were "wrong", admitting it had not checked
the data before it was released.
"One example of this is a figure of
拢114,142 for hotel costs in India for an educational exchange involving teachers
from Cornish schools. This amount was actually in Indian rupees and would have
been 拢1,645 in UK currency," the statement said.

Robertson added: "Cornwall Council is committed to achieving the best possible
value for money for council taxpayers in Cornwall.

GOP's Senate
redistricting map weakens Detroit, Wayne County
The map, first published

significant changes in the boundary lines of most of the state's 38 Senate
districts. Since the GOP controls both chambers of the Legislature and has a

the issue, the map could closely reflect the changes ultimately made to account
for population losses and shifts documented in the recent census.
Wayne
County would drop to seven senators, from eight.

Detroit senators. The current Senate has four senators from Detroit, which over
the last decade saw its population drop by 25 percent, from about 950,000 to
less than 715,000.
However, none of the current Detroit senators would
face off against each other under the new layout. Instead, each of their
Detroit-area districts would be extended further into the suburbs to maintain
the required population levels.
Macomb County, which now has three state
senators, could have as many as four under the Republican plan, though the added
district would take in only the northeast parts of the county combined with St.
Clair, Sanilac and Huron counties.
Oakland County would continue to have
four complete Senate districts and part of a fifth.

Fed Turns Down AIG Bid to Rebuy Dodgy Assets
The Federal Resaerve Bank of New York has turned down an offer by American International Group to repurchase dodgy mortgage bonds that the Fed had taken off the insurance company's hands during the financial crisis.
AIG had offered $15.7 billion for the bonds. The Fed thinks it can do better by having companies competitively bid on the mortgage bonds over time.
The economy and financial conditions have improved since the crisis. The Fed says there is a "high level" of interest in the bonds by investors.
The government had bailed out AIG in 2008, extending lifelines worth $182 billion. At the time, the Fed also took over a portfolio of soured mortgage bonds that AIG had held. The company is repaying the government by selling some of its businesses.
American International Group Inc., based in New York, said the Fed's decision could hurt taxpayers.
